Pune Metro: Why is Pune Metro service frequently getting disrupted?

PUNE: NpNews24 Online – Pune Metro | It has come to light that since the objective of Maha Metro of keeping three sub-stations operational to ensure that there are no disruptions in the metro service, has not been met, metro services are frequently developing problems. The sub-stations at Pimpri and Range Hills are operational but since the sub-station at Vanaz Depot is yet to start functioning, the services come to a halt if there is disruption in the power supply. Continuous power supply is essential for smooth operation of metro services. Care is taken to ensure that there is continuous power supply without any problem to the metro. For Pune Metro, two independent sub-stations and another sub-station has been set up for emergency use. A sub-station has been set up at Pimpri for Pimpri to Swargate route and another sub-station at Vanaz depot for Vanaz-Ramwadi route.

Apart from this, a backup has been created at the Range Hills depot of Maha Metro. At present, Pimpri and Range Hills sub-stations are operational and the third sub-station is yet to be fully operationalised. Hence, last month, it took a lot of time for Maha Metro to re-start the service after the services were affected twice or thrice.

If there is regular power supply from any sub-station to the metro and if there is any problem, the mechanism for supplying power from another sub-station has to be activated. At present, Maha Metro is carrying out various tests to check whether the system starts automatically and metro services operate without any disruption. The tests are in the final phase and in the future, metro services will not be affected causing inconvenience to passengers, Maha Metro officials said.

Maha Metro had planned to set up two independent sub-stations and establish a sub-station at Range Hills for emergency use. The sub-station at Vanaz Depot could not be operationalised before the inauguration of the extended stretch on August 1 by PM Modi. Hence, power is being supplied through Range Hills sub-station. It has come to light that there is load on the sub-station which has been created as a back up.

Shravan Hardikar, MD of Maha Metro said, “The work of Vanaz sub-station is in the final phase. Efforts are underway to make it operational as early as possible. After this sub-station becomes operational, the metro service will never be affected.”
