Pune News : Zebras to be brought to Katraj Zoo after 8-9 months

PUNE: NpNews24 Online   – Pune News | The PMC is making efforts to ensure that tourists should be able to see different and rare animals at the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park located at Katraj. Zebras are to be brought to the park and efforts are being made to search for suitable animals in Europe, Israel and Africa. The PMC has floated a tender worth ₹1 crore. (Pune News)

 

The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park is spread over 130 acres at Katraj. The park has a snake park, bonnet monkey, bear, fox, tiger, elephant, leopard, nilgai, wolf and 450 animals of 60 varieties. There are seven tigers in the park. Arjun and Bhakti, which have been brought from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and white tigress brought from Rajkot are a centre of attraction. Now, zebras and hyena are to be brought to the zoo. The civic administration has given its approval.

 

Zebra is from the horse family and is not found in India. It is found in Europe, Africa and Israel. Children and the elders are fascinated by Zebra. Hence, the PMC has decided to bring zebras to the zoo. The work of creating a 5,000 sq metre trench is 80 per cent complete and the civic body has spent ₹1 crore on it.

 

Two male and two female zebras are to be brought to the zoo. Their age will be approximately 3 to 4 years. The atmosphere in Pune is suitable for zebras. In India, at present, there are zebras at Mysore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kevadia zoos.

 

Dr Rajkumar Jadhav, Director of Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, said, “A hyena is going to be brought from Karnataka and their transfer process has almost been completed. It will be brought to the zoo after a month. The zebras would be brought to Pune through a proper organisation. Their transportation and other formalities will involve an expenditure. The zebras will be brought to the zoo after eight or nine months.”
