AMBIS system inaugurated in state: It will help to increase conviction rate, says Addl DGP Retesh Kumaarr

Pune : Deccan Express – Additional DGP of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Retesh Kumaarr inaugurated the computerised Automated Multi-Modal Biometric Identification System (AMBIS).

Special IGP (West) Suresh Mekhla, Deputy IGP Ranjankumar Sharma, SP of Maharashtra Cyber Police Sanjay Shintre, Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissioner Ankush Shinde, Deputy IGP Sudhir Hiremath, SP Abhinav Deshmukh, Retired IGP AD Shinde, Retired IGP Pradeep Shinde were present.

The AMBIS system is based on the latest technology and the police force is not only scanning the fingerprints but also scanning the eyes and face and saving them in a digital manner. If all units of Maharashtra police use this system, then the conviction rate will increase, said Retesh Kumaarr.

Deputy IGP Sudhir Hiremath made the opening remarks. At that time, all senior officers of CID, chief expert of fingerprint department Rohodar Kasar, Expert PI Avinash Sarveer, Expert PI Rupali Gaikwad and all officials of fingerprint department were present. Senior officers of all commisionerates in the state also attended the meet through video conference.

Earlier, criminals were identified by their fingerprints. Now, they will be identified by the palm, face in CCTV footage and photograph. In this system, there is a provision to save fingerprints, palm, face and iris and match them with other photographs.

Maharashtra is the first state to implement AMBIS at the police station level. In this system, the data of 6.5 lakh arrested accused and convicts has been saved. The AMBIS system in future will be linked with CCTNS, Prism, CCTV and the national level NFIS system.

All police stations, zonal offices, police commissionerates, district police headquarters, fingerprint centres, training centres and central jails have been equipped with AMBIS hardware and software. Interpol and the FBI are using this system.

The fingerprints of the arrested accused will be registered online and their criminal history will be checked and preventive measures will be taken through this system. As a part of the AMBIS system, portable AMBIS system will be used and it will become easier to trace criminals by using chance prints found on the spot. This will lead to a higher conviction rate in the state.

The AMBIS system is based on modern technology and what distinguishes it from other systems is its speed and accuracy. The system will be playing an important role to maintain law and order in the state and take preventive action against criminals.

On a trial basis, from 2020 till April 2022, in 52 cases involving property thefts of Rs 2.14 crore, the accused were traced.
