What’s the matter?
The project affected people have demanded that the international airport at Navi Mumbai should be named after Bhumiputra leader D B Patil. During his lifetime, D B Patil agitated for the locals to get their rights and fair compensation for the land. Travelling as a local MLA, MP, he spent the last years of his life for the Bhumiputra movement. Therefore, the locals are aggressive in demanding that the airport in Navi Mumbai be named after him. BJP also supported the demand of the locals.

Shiv Sena, however, has taken a stand that the airport should be named after Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray. Shiv Sena says that since the airport in Mumbai is named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, it would be appropriate to name this airport after Shiv Sena chief.

In fact, the naming of the airport is a matter of the central government. The state government can send a proposal for this name. However, it is up to the central government to decide whether to accept it or not.
