United States Toughens the Rules for International Students

The United States has tightened the policy for students from other countries. The presence of students and their families on the second day of violation of the rules (student status) will be considered illegal, even if their visa deadline has not expired.

New rules have been implemented from August 9. The first rule was that at the time the day anyone proved guilty or the judge’s order was issued in immigrant cases, the residence in the United States was considered illegal.

If a student does not appear for enough time in the institute, it will be considered a violation of the student status rules.

As per the rules now, after the completion of the study and after the Grace Period,  the government will take action on staying in the United States or even on working illegally.

In the year 2017, more than 21,000 Indians who were supposed to leave the country at the end of their permissible limits overstayed their visas, as per the latest official report.

While the percentage of Indians overstaying and not leaving the US after the expiry of their visas is not very high compared to some other nations, but in sheer number India ranks among the top 10 countries whose citizens come to the US legally and continue to stay illegally.

There are largest number of Indian students after China in the US. According to the Open Doors Report of 2017, 1.86 lakh Indian students are studying in the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security in its latest annual report said that in 2017, more than 10.7 lakh Indians visited the United States on the popular B-1, B-2 visas, which is issued to those who come to the US for business, visit or tourism purposes.

Of these, 14,204 overstayed in the country. According to the report, 1,708 of these Indians left the US later after the expiry of their visas, while there is no record of 12,498 Indians leaving the country. This could be presumed that they continue to stay in the US as an illegal immigrant.

According to the new policy, there will be a 10-year block on the illegal stay of people living illegally for 180 days.
