Senior sports journalist Pralhad Sawant pass away

Senior sports journalist and sports organizer Pralhad Sawant (69) died on Thursday in Pune.

Sawant worked as sports journalist for more than three decades. He started his career from Sakal newspaper. He had covered seven Olympic and all the Asian Games competitions since 1982, and also the Cricket World Cup Tournament in 1996 (Pakistan) and 1999 (London).

He was manging Maharashtra Athletics Association for four decades, he worked at various positions in Maharashtra Olympic Association and Indian Athletics Federation. Under his leadership, several national-international competitions were successfully organized in Pune with Asian Cross-country, Asian Athletics and Asian Grand Prix.

Maharashtra government gave him the “Shiv Chhatrapati Award” in recognition of his work. He was also awarded Balashastri Jambhekar Award and Nanasaheb Parulekar Award for best journalism by the state government

He was the manager of the Indian team for the Asian Athletics Championship in France in 1990 and in Sri Lanka in 2003. He was the head of the Maharashtra team at the National Games in Punjab. He successfully organized the Pune International Marathon for 28 years. For more than four decades, he was associated with athletics.

Prahlad Sawant in his young age was a medium and long run runner. Sawant’s family will cremate him at Vaikunth crematorium at 9.00 am tomorrow morning. The Pune District Athletics Association has postponed Young Athletics Competition for a day, which was supposed to begin tomorrow.
