185 Maratha protesters detained in Pune

A total of 185 people have been detained by Pune city police from three different places for violence during bandh over Maratha reservation issue on Thursday.

In the first incident near Chandni Chowk, some protesters had blocked the Pune-Bangalore highway with stones and tree branches in the afternoon. When police tried to remove them, some miscreants pelted stones at police personnel resulting in injuries to 5 personnel and officers. Two police vans were also damaged. In order to control the mob, police fired teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge. A total of 83 protesters were detained till late Thursday night.

In the second incident, 21 persons were detained when they tried to block traffic agar Khanduji Baba chowk in Deccan area, even after the protests were over.

At District Collector’s office, the Maratha Kranti Morcha leaders had submitted their petition to the district collector and announced end of protest at 2 pm, but members of other groups forcefully entered the collector’s office premises. They had also damaged window glass of the security cabin.

Even after hours of discussion as the Maratha protesters refused to leave the office of Pune district collector, Pune city police resorted to mild lathicharge. Till late night, about 81 protesters including 5 women were detained by Bundgarden police station.

Except these, there were minor incidents of vandalism including damage to PMPML bus on Laxmi road, vegetable stalls ransacked in Somwar Peth, vehicles damaged in Marketyard and Kothrud, while some protesters broke the gate of Persistent company near Nal Stop. Some protesters had entered the office of FIS (formerly Sungard) and forced employees to leave. They had also pelted stone at Syntel office in Talwade. A bus full of employees was attacked near Dehuroad.

Meanwhile, there was complete shutdown in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad as bandh was called by the Maratha organizations over reservation issue.
