Pune PMC News | Pune Municipal Corporation’s Initiative: Treated Sewage Finds New Purpose in Construction

Pune : Pune PMC News | The initiative to use treated sewage for construction projects in the city has gained momentum, with 4 lakh 90 thousand liters of sewage already utilized. The water supply department of the municipal corporation has reported that the use of treated sewage is receiving a positive response.

To ensure the implementation of this practice, the municipal corporation has made it mandatory for all ongoing construction projects in the city to utilize treated water from sewage treatment plants. In order to facilitate the process, an application has been developed where developers and tanker owners can register their construction sites and availability to supply treated water.

Initially, there were challenges in the registration process, as some tanker drivers were hesitant to supply water through the application. In response, the municipal administration issued instructions to register through deployment, resulting in an increase in the use of treated wastewater.

Since the introduction of this initiative, 147 tanker drivers and 765 construction professionals have registered, leading to the utilization of 4 lakh 90 thousand liters of treated wastewater for construction purposes. The treated water is sourced from eight sewage treatment plants operated by the municipality.

By promoting the use of treated sewage, the municipal corporation aims to conserve freshwater resources and reduce the strain on the city’s water supply. This practice not only contributes to sustainable development but also ensures the effective utilization of wastewater resources.

Using treated sewage for construction projects not only helps in reducing water demand but also provides a cost-effective alternative to freshwater sources. The treated wastewater undergoes an extensive treatment process, ensuring its safety and suitability for construction purposes.

The municipal corporation’s initiative showcases the commitment to implementing environmentally friendly practices and creating a more sustainable city. It sets an example for other cities to follow, emphasizing the importance of using alternative water sources and adopting innovative solutions for water conservation.

As the registration numbers continue to grow, the use of treated sewage for construction is expected to increase further. This will contribute to the overall sustainability goals of the city and promote responsible water management practices.
