The award, announced on September 26 on the sidelines of 73rd UN General Assembly in New York, was presented by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Guterres said PM Modi recognized the fact that climate change poses a direct existential threat to us. “He knows what we need to do to avoid a catastrophe. Other leaders also recognize, know and understand, but the difference is that he not only recognizes but he acts.”

Asserting that the poor and the marginalized were the ultimate victims of the climate injustice, Modi said: “we need to put the same emphasis on protecting nature as we do on other issues”.

Along with this, the President of France Emmanuel Macroon was also honored with this award. This honor was given to five other persons and organizations along with PM Modi and President Mankrons. Six world celebrities have been honored with UN’s highest environmental award to take steps in the field of environment.

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP, or UN Environment) hosted its 2018 Champions of the Earth Awards Ceremony, honoring young people and world leaders for their efforts to create a positive environmental impact. The event, held in the margins of the 73rd UNGA’s high-level week and Global Goals Week, highlighted the 2018 Champions’ work and emphasized the importance of youth, innovation, and collaboration to achieve environmental goals.
