Justice Gogoi becomes new Chief Justice of India

After a series of verdicts given by the former chief justice of the Supreme Court finally the position has been taken by Justice Ranjan Gogoi who is now the new Chief Justice of India (CJI).

He was sworn in as 46th Chief Justice of India on October 3, Wednesday at Rashtrapati Bhawan’s Darbar Hall. He took oath in the presence of President Ramnath Kovind. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, and other dignitaries were present for this ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan’s Darbar Hall.

Justice Gogoi has now replaced Justice Dipak Misra, as new CGI. His tenure as CJI of Supreme Court will end on November 17, 2019. Justice Dipak Misra’s tenure was ended on October 2.

 

At September 4, Justice Gogoi’s name was officially suggested to Ministry of law. It is a quite interesting fact that, Justice Ranjan Gogoi was one of the four senior-most judges, who took a press meet and raised questions on Chief Justice’s division of works. Other SC Judges were Kurien Joseph, Chelameswar and Madan B Lokur. They also mentioned that the Democracy is in danger.

 

This was a historical press meet in nation’s history. First time in the country, senior most judges alleged on CJI in the following press meet. This became the topic of discussion in the country during that time.

 

Chief Justice Dipak Misra had suggested the name of Justice Ranjan Gogoi to Ministry of law, as a new CJI of India in the first week of September. At that time, a discussion was going on that the government might suggest a name of any Junior Judge for this post. Now such speculations have stopped.

 

Justice Gogoi was born on November 18, 1954, and he is the first CJI, who belongs from northeast India. Gogoi started his carrier from Guwahati High Court in February 2001. He was appointed as Supreme Court Judge in April 2012.

Challenges in front of Justice Ranjan Gogoi:  

 

As a new CJI, Ranjan Gogoi has to give decisions on many cases which are sensitive and controversial. As well as the entire nation’s attention is on these cases.

It involves cases like the Ayodhya dispute and National Civil Registration (NRC) in Assam as these issues are major. He also has a huge responsibility to resolve pending cases from last few years and give a judgment.
