The centre on Tuesday granted three months extension for Director General of Police (DGP) Dattatray D Padsalgikar, as per request of state government.

Padsalgikar, a 1982 batch IPS officer, was to retire from the police department after 36 years of service on August 31.

In the past government had given extensions to DGP Dhananjay Jadhav and PS Pasricha but since then no DGP had got extension in the recent past.

The state government had sent a proposal to the Centre seeking extension for Padsalgikar. Extension for Padsalgikar also means a longer term for Mumbai Police Commissioner Subodh Kumar Jaiswal who was appointed on June 30. Jaiswal is the second most senior officer in DG rank and had to be promoted as state DG if Padsalgikar retired as per his superannuation on August 31, 2018.

Jaiswal has had a long stint in agencies and was working with India’s external intelligence agency RAW when he was appointed as CP. As the chief minister wanted Jaiswal to head Mumbai Police and had been convincing him for the top job, Jaiswal said that he was not keen on a small term of two months.

Extension for Padsalgikar means Jaiswal can get extension as CP. For this, the state is relying on SC order that says DGs can be given a tenure post. In this case, Jaiswal could become DG in September 2020 and continue till September 2022.

Jaiswal’s appointment has reportedly upset senior IPS officers. If he stays as CP for two more years as wanted by the state and the CM, the move would upset many others as many IPS officers are eyeing the top cop job in Mumbai Police.
