Long distance train to have water every 5 minutes?

New Delhi: NP NEWS 24 ONLINE – Indian railway is all set to introduce a system which will reduce water filling time from the existing twenty minutes to just five minutes at stations.

Water woes onboard trains will soon be a thing of the past after the plan is been executed. The system is all set to go on board by March at over 142 stations to have water filling system for which 300 crores have been sanctioned by Rail board.

According to the plan water in long-distance trains which is used in toilets and washbasins is filled every 300-400 km, even if they are not empty, to ensure that there is adequate water in the coaches.

With the use of quick watering system, a 24-coach train can be filled up within five minutes and multiple trains can be simultaneously watered at the same time.

Member of Railway Board quoted that,” Earlier the water in the coaches was filled with the help of four-inch pipes. These would now be replaced with six-inch pipes with high power motors and the water would be supplied to the train coaches through a computerised system called SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), designed by RDSO (Research Designs and Standards Organisation).”

According to the report, the old pipes did not have enough pressure and it would take around 20 minutes to fill one water tank with capacity of 1,800 litres of water in a coach creating shortage.

A senior official also added that they have received complaints regarding inadequate water in coaches and this system would ensure that there will be no water shortage in trains because the time to fill up the tanks was minimal.

The ministry has also planned to install pumps of 40 horsepower to increase the water pressure.
