Kamla Nehru Hospital Pune | 13 out 15 machines in dialysis centre in Kamla Nehru Hospital non-functional since many months; Dialysis service on ventilator

PUNE : Kamla Nehru Hospital Pune | The PMC started a dialysis facility in coordination with an organisation at the Kamla Nehru Hospital to make it available at a low price for economically weaker sections.

However, for many months, 13 out of 15 machines are shut. Since the PMC has not paid bills, the salaries of the employees have not been paid. This has affected the service provided to patients. Since PMC’s Health Department is turning a blind eye to this issue, the dialysis facility is now on the ventilator.

The number of people suffering from blood pressure and diabetes are increasing day by day. Citizens have to take medicines to control the disease. After taking medicines for many years, it affects the kidney’s functioning and the kidneys of some people stop working. To remove harmful things from the blood, dialysis is carried out as per patients’ requirements.

Private hospitals charge ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 for each dialysis session and these charges are not affordable for poor patients. Hence, seven years ago, Mrs Aruna Naik dialysis centre was started in Kamla Nehru Hospital along with cooperation of Lions Club of Poona Mukund Nagar Charitable Trust. So far, dialysis of 40,000 patients has been carried out.
After taking a card of PMC’s Shahari Garib Yojana, the member has to pay only ₹400 for dialysis. Dilight Tubing and injection to increase blood count are also provided under this scheme which helps to save money.

The dialysis centre has proved a boon for poor patients but the machines are out of order for a year. Only two machines out of 15 machines in Aruna Naik Unit are functioning and needy patients are suffering. They have to wait for hours for dialysis. There is lack of cleanliness and ACs are not functioning which addas to patients’ woes.

A representative of Lions Club of Poona Mukund Nagar Charitable Trust said, “The PMC has not paid our bill of ₹15 lakh from February and this has created financial problems. Although we have installed 15 machines, 10-12 machines are required. Some machines are old and the work of replacing them is going on. We want to operate this centre in a better manner but administrative problems have to be resolved.”

Dr Bhagwan Pawar, Chief of Health Department, PMC, said “The dialysis machines are closed since last year. There are less number of technicians and nurses which are adding to patients’ woes. However, till the patients complained, senior officers of PMC were in the dark about the non-functioning of these machines. Now, instructions have been issued to Assistant Health Officer Dr Manisha Naik to check these machines and submit a report.”

“Complaints have been received about the dialysis centre at the Kamla Nehru Hospital and the process of paying the bills is going on and the money would be deposited in one or two days. Efforts will be made to remove the lacunae,” Pawar added.

“Dialysis machines are not working at Kamla Nehru Hospital. There are some problems with some machines that are being operated. Patients are feeling very cold during the dialysis and their hands and legs are getting swollen. Civic officials are not giving clear answers about the problems at the centre. I have given a letter to the Health Department chief suggesting that the civic body should look into the problems at the centre and prevent it from shutting down,” said social worker Umesh Naik.
