Effective awareness necessary about heat waves – IIT Mumbai Prof. Parameshwar Udmale
Mumbai : NpNews24 Online – IIT Mumbai | IIT Mumbai professor Parameshwar Udmale said that giving early warning, planning in the sensitive areas and going for effective public awareness was necessary for public safety in the event of heat waves. (IIT Mumbai)
He was addressing Heatwaves National workshop 2023 at IIT Powai which discussed threadbare early warning, planning in sensitive areas and effective awareness campaign. Delegates from Orissa, Maharashtra and Karnataka made presentations on this topic.
Stating that heatwaves are of various types in various areas Prof. Udmale said that there is a need for more study of the same and there is a need for gathering information about heatwave areas. He said that these are having an impact on entire life with social, economic and physical impact. He expressed the need for use of modern technology while planning in the sensitive areas.
The disaster management officials from Orissa, Maharashtra and Karnataka made presentations based on various measures taken by their respective states on heat waves. They also made presentations on various innovative initiatives and ways and means to reduce the losses during heat waves with the help of awareness campaigns based on informing the people, educating them and interacting with them.
Take crops as per weather forecasts
The global weather changes are resulting in rising heat waves and it has its impact on the agricultural sector which is why the experts suggested going for crops as per the weather forecasts, ensuring crop insurance and going for crops which require less water.
Informing about various measures to avoid crop damage due to heat waves, Dr Vinay Sehgal said that food security was an important issue and farmers need to abide by National guidelines while going for cultivation.
CDRI director general Amit Prothi addressed the workshop on water and energy planning in the back-drop of growing heat waves.
