Adani Group Joins the Race to Buy Air India, May File an Expression of Interest!

New Delhi : A new name has emerged in the race to buy the government airline Air India. Sources say that the country’s largest company Adani Group is planning to buy Air India. This is the first time that the Adani Group has been named in the purchase of a debt-ridden state-run airline. Earlier, the names of big companies like Tata Group and Hinduja have also come up to buy Air India.

Sources say that the Adani Group may file an Expression of Interest (EoI) to buy government company Air India. Preparations for this have started. Adani Group is in the race to become India’s largest airport operator. The group currently operates Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Mangalore airports. Apart from this, the company has also applied for airport operations in Thiruvananthapuram, Ahmedabad and Guwahati. However, the company has not yet released any official statement on the news of buying Air India. Another official associated with the case says that the Adani Group may face a legal challenge to buy Air India. Because Adani Group is already operating some airports. However, any final decision has to be taken by the central government.

The Central Government has decided to disinvest Air India this year. Applications have been invited to buy Air India to all interested companies of the world including India. Air India currently has a huge debt of Rs 22,000 crore. For the first time in 2018, the central government decided to sell 76 percent stake of Air India. But this time the government has invited applications to sell the entire 100 percent stake of Air India. But no buyers have been found so far.
