A Guest House Near Crystal Tower Gutted by Fire

A building in Mumbai was gutted by fire on Monday afternoon.  Four fire engines have been sent to the spot.

The fire covered the shop situated on the ground floor of a guest house building. It is situated near Premier talkies in Mumbai’s Parel area. This is the second such incident within one week Mumbai has witnessed.

According to eye-witnesses, the fire broke out around 4 pm at Maharashtra Guest House, located inside Iqbal Mansion on the busy Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road, next to Premier Cinema in Parel. The cause of fire is not yet known and no casualties have been reported.

Maharashtra Guest House located opposite to Crystal Tower near Premier Cinema in Parel area, within one week of period, this is second such incident after the Level-3 fire that had broken out at Crystal Tower. People trapped inside the tower were rescued using a crane.

Initially, 10 fire-fighting tenders were pressed into service at Crystal Tower last week. Later, an additional 10 fire tenders and four water tankers were rushed to the spot. The smoke spread rapidly and residents were trapped on the building’s staircases.

Four people, including an elderly woman, died and 16 people were injured in the incident. The guest house building where today’s incident took place is situated close to Crystal tower.

According to the Brihan-Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the building did not have the mandatory occupation certificate granted by the civic body, but it was already occupied by around 58 flat owners.

The developer of the building, Abdul Razak Ismail Supariwala, was booked under IPC Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others). He was subsequently arrested.

Earlier today, another fire was reported in at Aamcho Koliwado restaurant in Vasai township of Palghar district.
