On the occasion of the 150th birthday anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, a special program on “Gandhi Kal, Aaj ani Udya” (Gandhi yesterday, today and tomorrow) was arranged on October 2, at 10 am, at SM Joshi Foundation, Janjwe Chowk, Pune.

This program was arranged especially in Pune, as it has special relevance in Gandhi’s history, like famous ‘Gandhi- Ambedkar Agreement’  also known as Poona pact, was also happened at this city, as well Mahatma Gandhi had spent a lot of time in this city. For remembering his work and pay honor to him was the idea behind this program.

Shripad Joshi, the president of Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Sahitya Mahamandal Nagpur, was the spokesperson for this program, Vinod Shirsath, the editor of weekly Sadhna, activist Razia Patel, who worked for the development of Muslim women were present on this occasion.

Shripad Joshi said in his speech, “I do not understand that, why people don’t call Gandhi as rebellion, as a revolutionary… How history can change the image of the person and  Gandhi is the best example of it. He was a common man, with great thoughts and behavior. He fought with the system, with Britishers by his own way. He did experiments on himself and improved his drawbacks by honestly accepting them.”

He further expressed, “I found many similarities in Gandhi’s ideology and Marxist thought, as well as in Gandhi and Ambedkar thoughts. Our society has a very bad habit to interpret history in the wrong way, people keep their interest in Gandhi- Ambedkar debate, instead of adopting the message given by them. Both of them were not enemy of each other”

Joshi also said that “Jayaprakash Narayan had continued the Gandhi’s ideology and Gandhi’s thought reached with me and with the new generation by him in a real way. I have seen  Vinoba at my childhood, and I understand actual Gandhi only through Jayaprakash. I understand one thing that – Gandhi’s idea of Swarajya was totally common man-centric and beneficial for him. But today’s era we discriminate people on the basis of their cast, cred, class, religion etc.  ”

At the end of his speech and while focusing on the environmental side of Gandhi he said, “Gandhi was the great environmentalist, in today’s era,  we are affecting by all polluted thing from our food, drinks to the air we took.”

Vinod Shirsath said that “Lack of skilled worker- is the biggest problem and challenge of our country in today’s era. We have studied Gandhi almost by every angle, I think on the  occasion of Gandhi’s 150th Jayanti, we should implement his idea in the educational system – Nayi Talim, which focuses on practical and  theoretical knowledge at the same time and help to develop the skills in a student.”

Razia Patel is an activist and works for Muslim women empowerment said that “Kasturba Gandhi’s work and her thoughts should reach in society. It is very necessary for empowering women in today’s era.” The program was ended by a song on Mahatma Gandhi by Priya.
