This day fills every heart with pride and gratitude. But, over the years, the definition of Independence Day and its significance has changed with time! The responsibility of making this nation a better place lies in the hands of the youth.

The feeling of Patriotism becomes strong when India wins cricket matches against Pakistan, or when Pakistani soldiers are killed by Indian soldiers or when a movie like Lagaan is telecasted. The excitement and enthusiasm is a mere guest for one day in the hearts of people. But is the youth really contributing to make this nation a better place to live in, is the question?

Independence Day today is only limited to partying and enjoying to the people of India. According to them ‘freedom’ is doing what makes you happy on this day, living your life happily without any restrictions, which is not the true meaning of Independence. What does Independence actually mean to the youth? Are they really doing something towards an independent nation?

NP News 24 did a survey on the psychology of today’s youth on this Independence Day. They had different perspectives and this is what they have to say:
Nikita Hejib(25), HR of a company said, “Freedom stands for something greater than just the right to act however I choose—it also stands for securing to everyone an equal opportunity for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To most reasonable people, freedom means more than just ‘free to do whatever I want’.”

Vivian James Anthony(20), a dancer and a student of Indira School of Communication said, “Freedom according to me is equality among men and women irrespective of gender. The day when both will be treated equally, our country then will be free and independent in true means.”

Suman Chowdhury(27), worker at Usha Martins, Jamshedpur said , “Independence is not just about a single day, It is about what steps we take each day to make it a better place. The feeling of patriotism should stay in our hearts forever and not just feeling proud on the ‘Independence Day’. It’s high time we really do something to make this nation independent truly.”

Anuksha Biswas(25), quality analyst said, “Freedom according to me is independence or liberation from the possession of some other person. We have the right to speak and act. Freedom is when each person of nation can stand and fight for themselves, specially the women today is not afraid of any humiliation or exploitation, they should come out of shell and fight for their self-respect.”

Abhishek Kale Patil(25), government contractor strongly said, “ Freedom for me is liberty to speak, express and deliver. Being an Indian and living in a democratic country should give me all the fundamental right to think and pursue. I am Proud to be an Indian.”
The youth today, is actually concerned about the issues of nation, they are aware of where they are going wrong, the only thing they need to do is take some action, become a responsible citizen and value the freedom and Independence given to us by our freedom fighters.
