Varandha Ghat | Raigad district administration closes Varandha Ghat for heavy vehicles for three months

BHOR : Varandha Ghat | The Varandha Ghat which extends from Bhor to Mahad has been closed for movement of heavy vehicles from July to September 30 on grounds of security by the Raigad district administration. This will affect the movement of MSRTC buses, big trucks and six-seater vehicles. During this period, only small cars and two-wheelers will be permitted to ply on the ghat.

Hence, it is clear that the ghat which was repaired after spending crores of rupees, is unsafe for travel during monsoon. Bhor’s Prant Officer Rajendra Kachre said that a proposal to shut the ghat from Bhor side will be sent to the district collector. Last year, due to heavy rains, there were frequent landslides and incidents of mud washing on the road and the sinking of the road. After the last monsoon, the PWD spent crores of rupees and repaired the road in the limits of Mahad and Bhor talukas.

This year also, the IMD has forecast heavy rains in Raigad district. Hence, a team of officials of NHAI, Revenue Department and police visited the Varandha Ghat area and inspected the road. Later, the Raigad district administration issued an order closing the road for three months.
“Vehicles going from Konkan to Pune should travel via Mahad, Mangaon, Tamhini Ghat, Mulshi, Pune and those going to Kolhapur should Poladpur, Khed, Chiplun, Patan, Karad and Kolhapur,” said SM Andhale, API, Mahad MIDC police station.

Varandha Ghat is a part of Mahad-Pandharpur national highway. For this road, the NHAI has sanctioned funds of ₹823 crore. However, the tender process for this work is yet to start.
