Swine flue patient hunt for ventilator beds in Pune hospitals

Swine flue positive patients from Pune and adjoining districts are hunting for ventilator beds in government and private hospitals. But many of the hospitals are failing to provide this special care. On the other hand, health department authority says that there are beds available in the government hospitals.

On Saturday morning, a 50-year-old swine flu positive patient who is on ventilator came to Sassoon general hospital for further treatment. He was referred by Ashwini rural hospital from Solapur to Pune. To the shock of the patient neither the hospital had asked relatives where to shift the patient in Pune nor inquired for beds. Without confirming the beds, they sent the ventilator patient to Sassoon hospital, said the patient’s relative.

Swine flu virus which has claimed more than 26 lives in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations limit and rural Pune, is causing havoc among the people. As per the data provided by the Pune municipal corporation (PMC), on Friday there were 107 patients admitted in private and government hospital of which 37 are on the ventilator.

When contacted Dr. Prakash Bhoi, joint director of communicable disease, said, “we have called a meeting in this regard and will ensure that all government hospitals have adequate availability of beds in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad corporations areas.”
