Rising Temperature Levels Prompt Heatwave Alert in Pune and Surrounding Areas

Pune: The Pune region and its surrounding areas have been grappling with an intense heatwave over the past few weeks, with temperatures soaring to a scorching 38.9 degrees Celsius. The heat, exacerbated by the unrelenting sun, has prompted concerns among meteorological experts, who predict a further rise in temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius across the state in the coming days.

Dr. Anupam Kashyapi, Head of the Meteorological Department at the India Meteorological Department, noted that while March temperatures remained within the normal range, the prevailing conditions have been exceptionally hot. He attributed the elevated temperatures to increased humidity in the atmosphere, driven by rising moisture levels from the Arabian Sea.

Maharashtra, particularly regions like Malegaon and Jalgaon, has witnessed temperatures hovering around 36 to 40 degrees Celsius, underscoring the severity of the heatwave. Unlike last March, which experienced lower humidity levels and consequently cooler temperatures, this year’s heatwave has been more intense and persistent.

In light of the sweltering conditions, the Meteorological Department has issued advisories urging residents of Pune to take precautions against the sun’s harsh rays. The Pune Municipal Corporation has also recommended preventive measures, emphasising the importance of staying hydrated, wearing loose, light-coloured clothing, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours.

Additionally, the municipal corporation has implemented measures to mitigate the risk of heatstroke, providing guidance on staying cool and hydrated while outdoors. Residents are advised to refrain from wearing heat-absorbing clothing and opt for breathable fabrics instead.

As temperatures continue to soar, the Meteorological Department’s forecast for the coming days indicates a continuation of clear to partly cloudy skies across the region. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard against the oppressive heat.
