Pune : Pune’s Mango Festival | The production of hapus mangoes in Konkan this year faced a significant reduction due to the effects of climate change. As a result, there was a shortage of these mangoes in the market during the festive season. However, despite the scarcity, consumers made substantial purchases at the Mango Festival organized by the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board in Pune.

During the festival, the people of Pune indulged in mangoes worth approximately Rs. 19 crore. Additionally, mango exports witnessed an increase this year, with 942 tonnes being exported from the Vashi Export Facility Center of the Marketing Board.

The Mango Festival, which took place from April 1 to June 3, 2023, was held at the Zilla Parishad premises in Market Yard. The event featured 67 stalls and saw the participation of 105 farmers, including Hapus mango growers from Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, as well as saffron mango growers from Kolhapur and Satara districts.

Mangesh Kadam, the Assistant General Manager of the Marketing Board and controller of the festival, explained that the price of mangoes during the festival varied due to climate change. At the beginning of the festival in April, prices ranged from Rs. 700 to Rs. 1,200 per dozen, remaining stable throughout the month. In May, prices stabilized at Rs. 500-700 per dozen as the inflow of mangoes continued.

Subsequently, mangoes arrived from Ratnagiri district, and their price ranged from Rs. 300 to Rs. 500 per dozen. The festival witnessed the sale of approximately two and a half to three lakh dozen mangoes.

This year, due to factors such as temperature fluctuations, fog, unseasonal rain, and non-harvest, the overall mango production decreased by about 50 percent. While the initial season in February was favorable, the second and third seasons experienced only 50 percent of the usual yield.

Despite the shortage during this year’s mango season, mango exports remained strong. Although there was a scarcity of mangoes available for export in April, the situation improved in May. The total mango exports amounted to 650 tonnes this year, surpassing the previous year’s figures by 100 tons. Notably, the United States accounted for a significant portion of the exports.

Abhijit Bhasale from Rainbow International Exports emphasized that despite the challenges, they successfully exported mangoes to countries such as America, Australia, London, Japan, and the Netherlands, showcasing the demand and popularity of Indian mangoes in the international market.
