Pune PMC News – G20 Summit | G20 conference: Norms violated in lighting works

Works given to favoured contractors even before the tenders could be opened

PUNE : Pune PMC News – G20 Summit | Large-scale irregularities have been found in the beautification projects being carried out due to the G20 conference. Already, questions were being raised about pots worth crores of rupees and purchase of saplings and now the functioning of the electricity department is under a cloud. The electricity department has already got the work done from the contractors of the metro pillars and roads even before the tenders could be opened. What is surprising is that the tenders for these projects have been floated in bits and pieces like the garden department. Officials are being the rules under the guise of executing works relating to G20 conference.

The electricity department has floated a tender for focusing a beam of colourful light on the metro pillar under the Dhole Patil zonal office. The tender is of ₹49 lakh. The tender has been floated for a short period of seven days but the work was completed on Sunday.

Apart from this, tenders for doing colourful lighting at various flyovers, Vishrantwadi road, Alka Talkies to Dandekar Bridge have been floated. An expenditure of ₹40 lakh is expected. The works have been even before opening of the tenders. It is being said that the electricity department has got the work by a favoured contractor. Hence, the floating of tenders is a farce and all rules have been bent for the G20 conference.
Earlier, the garden department had floated two tenders for placing of huge pots on seven flyovers on the Nagar Road and placing of imported exotic saplings.

These two tenders are of ₹98 lakh. To avoid getting the need for approval by the estimates committee, these tenders have been floated in pieces. When this matter was brought to the notice of the civic chief, he said that information about the market rates will be sought and later, a decision about the purchase would be made. However, the electricity department has floated tenders and within 24 hours, has got the work done by its favoured contractor even before the tenders could be opened. This has thrown the light on the functioning of the electricity department.

When contacted, the head of electricity department Srinivas Kandul said that many tenders had been floated for G20 works but changes had to be made in lighting work because of instructions from seniors. Since the G20 conference is beginning from today (June 12), the work was given to contractors at a lower rate to get the work done fast. The tenders were floated in pieces to ensure that the work is completed in a shorter span of time.
