Pune Dams Water Level | Pune’s Bhama Askhed Dam Struggles with Dwindling Water Reserves

Pune: Pune Dams Water Level | The Bhama Askhed (Khed) dam, a crucial water reservoir serving the eastern part of Pune city, along with Khed, Shirur, and Daund, has accumulated only 43.25 percent of its total storage capacity today. This is a stark contrast to last year’s data when the dam boasted a water storage of 87.14 percent on the same date.

Bhama Askhed is an earthen dam constructed on the river Bhama in the western part of Khed taluka. The dam has a capacity of holding 8.14 Thousand Million Cubic Feet (TMC) of water. This year, the dam area has witnessed 301 mm of rainfall since June 1, contributing to the water accumulation.

Despite consistent rainfall in areas such as Shive, Wahgaon, Deshmukhwadi, Amboli, Bandra, Koliye, Ambhu, Pait, Pallu, Waghu, Torane, Ahire, among others, the water storage in the dam remains significantly lower than last year’s levels.

As of now, the total water storage in the dam stands at 3.79 TMC, with a useful water storage of 3.32 TMC. This significant reduction in water levels compared to last year raises concerns among local farmers, who fear that if water supply to Pimpri Chinchwad city is initiated in the future, it might lead to a depletion of water in the dam.

The dam has been instrumental in providing water to the pilgrimage site of Alandi and the eastern part of Pune city since last year. However, the excessive evaporation during the hot summer months has led to a rapid decline in water storage.

With the ongoing monsoon, the dam is witnessing a substantial inflow of water. In light of this situation, Assistant Engineer (Grade 1) Ashwin Pawar, Branch Engineer Nilesh Ghare-Deshmukh, and Canal Inspector Vasant Dhokre have issued a public appeal, urging tourists and visitors to exercise caution in the area.

The declining water levels in Bhama Askhed dam serve as a reminder of the importance of responsible water management and conservation practices. As Pune continues to experience rainfall, it becomes essential for all stakeholders, including government authorities, residents, and farmers, to come together and implement sustainable strategies to ensure an adequate water supply for the region’s present and future needs.
