Pune Crime News | Man sentenced to life imprisonment for setting wife on fire

Baramati : Pune Crime News | A man was sentenced to life imprisonment (LI) for killing his wife by dousing diesel and setting her on fire. The punishment was awarded by Addl District and Sessions Judge JP Darekar.

 

The convict has been identified as Umesh Ramchandra Gaikwad. The incident had taken place at Yavat, taluka Daund on May 19, 2012. Gaikwad had killed his wife Usha by dousing diesel on her and setting her on fire. The crime was registered at the Yavat Police Station. Gaikwad was a drunkard. He used to sell country liquor too. His wife Usha was against this. Hence, he used to torture her. On May 19, 2020, he brought country liquor for selling. However, it could not be sold. Then he started consuming the entire stock. Usha resisted his binge drinking. She poured out liquor from his glass. Gaikwad then beat her up. She emptied the entire can of liquor. Infuriated, Gaikwad doused diesel on her and set her on fire.

 

Later, he realised what he had done. He tried to save her and received burns to his hands. Their children were witnesses to the incident. Usha was then shifted to the Sassoon General Hospital. She had made a statement before dying. A case was then registered based on her statement. Their son had also recorded his statement. He had also confirmed it in the court. The evidence went against Gaikwad. Public Prosecutor Prasanna Joshi argued in the court. Addl District and Sessions Judge JP Darekar pronounced his judgment and sentenced Gaikwad to life imprisonment.

 

The then Police Inspector Balasaheb Kopnar investigated the case. Joshi argued on behalf of the prosecution. He was assisted by court officials NA Nalawade and Venunad Dhopare.
