Pune Crime Court News | 27-year-old youth sentenced to two years’ RI for assaulting traffic policeman

PUNE : Pune Crime Court News | A two-wheeler rider who assaulted a traffic cop after abusing him and tore his uniform when asked by the latter why he had broken the signal, was sentenced to two years’ rigorous imprisonment by the court. The testimony of a witness proved crucial in the case. Addl Sessions Judge AI Perampalli sentenced the accused.

 

The two-wheeler rider has been identified as Gafoor Shahabuddin Shaikh (27), a resident of Gultekdi. Policeman Anand Prakash Gaddure had lodged a complaint against him at the Market Yard police station. The incident took place on March 19 2014 from 10.30 am to 10.45 am at Gangadham Chowk. At that time, the complainant was working as constable in Swargate branch of the Pune Traffic Police. On the day of the incident, he was managing the traffic at Gangadham Chowk. The accused broke the signal twice. When the complainant asked him, the accused caught his collar and abused him.

 

 

The accused tore his uniform and damaged the number plate. A witness, Ad Chetan Bhutada, immediately informed the police control room. The police immediately rushed to the spot and arrested the accused and registered an FIR against the accused for obstructing government work, issuing threats. Additional Public Prosecutor Pradeep Gehlot appeared on behalf of the policeman and examined five witnesses.

 

 

The testimony of witness Ad Bhutada proved crucial and Gehlot demanded strictest punishment for the accused.
“The accused has abused and assaulted a government employee. The only option is to punish him and this will send a signal to the concerned people,” the court said and sentenced him.

 

“Advocate and police officials are important constituents of the judicial system and they are working for the people’s rights. When injustice is done to one of them, the second constituent has to make efforts to ensure that he gets justice,” Ad Chetan Bhutada said.
