Popular diet trends to look out for!

NP NEWS 24 ONLINE- There is a lot of noise out there when it comes to diets. Diet’s idea involves simple math – eat whatever you want, but you have to make sure that the number of calories you eat is less than the number of calories you burn off. From following a CICO diet, short for ‘Calories In Calories Out’, to going on a water fast where you consume nothing but water alone for days on end, 2018 has seen some of the most unusual diet fads of all times.

Here are some of the trendiest diet trends of 2018.

Lectin Free

Lectins are found in plants, mostly legumes and grains. But those who suggest we should go lectin free forget to mention that lectins are destroyed during cooking, and legumes and whole grains are always eaten cooked.

Paleo

The Paleo diet has been in news recent times, gaining a lot of attention and even inspiring Paleo cafes to open up all over the world. The Paleo diet claims to be based on eating principles from the Palaeolithic period, where primary food sources were vegetables, fruit, nuts, insects and meat. It is high protein, high fat and low in carbohydrates, recommending an increase in meat consumption and removal of dairy foods, legumes and whole grains. It is high protein, high fat and low in carbohydrates, recommending an increase in meat consumption and removal of dairy foods, legumes and whole grains.

Flexitarian

Flexitarian diet is all about choosing to eat more plant-based foods. Also known as “casual vegetarian”, its focus is on healthy plant-based swaps rather than a total diet overhaul to exclude animal products.

Ketogenic

One of the most unique diet of all times is ketogenic diet. Keto diet is very low in carbohydrates and very high in fat. Eating this way aims to send the body into a state of ketosis, which means your body is using fat and its by-products as its primary source of fuel. Short-term side effects of the diet include fatigue, headaches, constipation, bad breath and nausea. Keto converts praise the diet for its weight loss benefits, although mostly short-term and unsustainable. They also claim the diet has been linked with improving energy levels, mental focus and disease prevention.

Macrobiotic

Eating macrobiotic food is more of a lifestyle change, than a dietary change. Macrobiotics involves eating mostly organic and locally grown food products. The foods that are included in this diet are vegetables, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Small amounts of fish and meat are allowed, occasionally. Its focus on eating more vegetables does make it a great option for people with high cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes.

Raw food

Instead of cooking, this diet gives several alternative preparation options like juicing, blending, dehydrating, soaking and sprouting. Raw food not only includes fruits and some vegetables includes any form of uncooked food that has not been refined, pasteurised, canned or chemically processed.
