PMC STP | Builders cite difficulties in transporting treated sewage water to construction sites

Pune : NpNews24 Online PMC STP |  The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Water Supply Department issued instructions to construction companies to use sewage water treated at its STPs instead of using tap or borewell water. However, they are finding it difficult to implement the order. (PMC STP | )

Tankers are not available to transport water from the STP to construction sites. Moreover, all STPs are located on the river bank. Hence, the transport cost rises to carry water from these STPs to sites in the city outskirts.
There are many construction sites in the city as well as road concretization work is also going on at many places. Huge quantities of water are required for this purpose. This water need is mainly fulfilled by taking tap water or borewell water. Drinking water demand is also increasing in the city. Residents also get drinking water through borewells. In the wake of water requirements in the future, the PMC issued orders to use treated sewage water for construction purposes two months ago. However, it has not got a positive response yet.

When contacted, PMC Water Supply Department Superintending Engineer Dandge said a meeting was held between civic contractors and private builders to know problems in using treated water at STPs for construction purposes. Water tankers are mainly used for transporting drinking water. Quality of treated water from STPs is comparatively poor. Hence, water tankers cannot be used for this purpose. Almost all STPs are on the river bank in the city. Transporting water from there to the city periphery, where big housing projects are coming up, is not only costly but also time-consuming. However, if the PMC provides tankers for transporting treated water, they expressed their readiness to use such water. A decision will be made at the senior level in this regard.
