‘Jamshedi Navroz’, is the talk of the town of all the Parsis on the 17th of August. This is the day which they all wait for, the whole year. Forgetting all the past, dreadful incidents, they focus on a new, fresh start and a new beginning. They believe in moving ahead with their life with a positive thought this day!

What is ‘Jamshedi Navroz’?

This day is celebrated as the Parsi New Year and is a regional holiday celebrated on 17 August in Maharashtra, India. It is also known as ‘Jamshedi Navroz’ after the legendary King of Persia, Jamshed who started the Parsi Calendar and Navroz meaning ‘new day’.

Celebrations and preparations of ‘Pateti’:

Nothing can be best for the Parsis to start their day by going to temples for praying and worshipping their gods and goddesses early in the morning. They believe in greeting each other by wishing ‘Navroz Mubarak’. They visit each other’s houses, enjoy various dishes together, give gifts to each other in the family which are a part of ritual, and have dinner at night in hotels. Playing games, dancing and enjoying are what they love doing this day.

Mouth-watering dishes this day:

Early in the morning, they start with Sangan ki Sev as their breakfast. Main course of lunch includes Dal Chaval with tomato, Sali Boti, chicken gravy, biriyani, salad and raita.
Dinner will start with a welcoming drink, later Dhansak, which is a dish prepared by mutton or chicken and is deliciously cooked. Chicken Russian Pattis, and other dishes of chicken are also been cooked, whereas, sweet dish includes ice-cream, kulfi, malai kofta and custard.

Hosang Phiroze Bodhanwala(58) who is a building contractor said, “We came from Iran about 1388 year’s back. And as promised to King of Sanjan we have mixed in hearts of all Indians like ‘sugar dissolves in the milk’. We are the biggest and foremost philanthropy society of India. We celebrate this occasion to mark a new year with love affection and joy with our family and friends.”

Armin Bodhanwala(22), who is a cloud engineer said, “Today we wish ‘Navroz Mubarak’ to one and all by greeting each other. Parsis celebrate their new year by going to Parsi Agyari that is fire temple and worship fire god this day, exchanging gifts and by partying together. Honestly, we don’t want this day to end ever. We follow the idea this day of ‘Khao, peeo ane majja ni life’ which means eat, drink and enjoy.”

Ruzin Bodhanwala(20), a mass-communication pursuing student said, “This day is really very important for us as it is the start of a new year. It is a very special day for us which brings the whole family together. First of all, we go to fire temple around 6 o’clock and later give sweets to each other and wish each other new year. We all spend time together and enjoy a lot. We are very lucky and proud to be a Parsi.”

Laisha Patwa(14), a young school student said, “This day we pray for good thought, good words and good deeds to our fire god. I am very excited every year for this day as I get a lot of gifts and clothes from all my family members which is also a part of our ritual and enjoy till late night.”

Delna Kelawala(16), a teenager said, “Parsis follow the religion of Zoroastrianism, one of the oldest religions. It was founded by Zarathustra. We go to fire temple. We make many arrangements for this day, we wear new clothes, clean our houses with excitement to mark this day. This day helps take place a family gathering. Also, giving and taking of gifts takes place.”
