Modi Government haven’t fulfilled any promise: Prafulla Kumar Mahanta
Former Chief Minister of Assam Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has accused Modi Government in a program held by a Pune based organization ‘Sarhad’. Mahanta said Bharatiya Janata Party had promised that the national citizenship registration would be implemented but however it seems like Narendra Modi Government is using National Register of Citizen (NRC) process in Assam for political gains.

Prafulla Kumar Mahanta is also a leader of Bhartiya Janata Party ally and National Democratic Alliance constituent party Assam Gana Parishad (AGP).

The program was also attended by Sudhakar Jadhavar Former Dean of the faculty of the Commerce Savitribai Phule University of Pune, leader of Assam Gana Parishad Dhruvjyoti Sarmah, Abhay Chhajed, founder president of the Sarhad, Sanjay Nahar, trustee Shailesh Wadekar and coordinator Sanjeev Shah

Mahanta further said, ” If this bill is passed, some Hindus coming from Bangladesh will get citizenship. Israel is the only country where citizenship is given on the basis of religion. In tackling the issue of NRC, there should not be any selfishness in the state. This also violates Assam’s agreement. The second issue is that such immigrants are not given a place in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, but the issue is happening in Assam and we need to think about it”

Apart from Mahanta large number of people and organization from Assam has opposed this bill.

Between 1951 and 1961, citizens of Assam were given the right to vote. Many people came to Assam after the war of 1965 and became the part of this country, they stabilized here and their name was also entered in the voters’ list. Whereas in 1971, Bangladesh became independent and fro their also Many people came here and now they have not gone back yet. Now they have become citizens of India. It was also said that those born before 1971 will be called Indian citizens. The issue of the cultural, social and linguistic existence of the local communities in Assam was highlighted in Assam. But such bills can create a threat for the local people of Assam, which is really wrong as we need to protect the culture and language of Assam, Mahanta said.

Mahanta also expressed his views on freedom of expression, the judicial system of India, Nomination and Assam, Bodo language of Assam.
