Dialogue on remedies for adverse effects of heat waves
Mumbai : NpNews24 Online – National Workshop On Heat Waves | Global warming has resulted in an increased volume of heat waves. We need to step further immediately for obstructing the danger to lives. The collection of scientific data and effective solutions that can be implemented on the government level, was the cumulative opinion of the national workshop on heat waves. A workshop on the need to address the growing volume of heat waves as a result of global warming with proper solutions has been organized at IIT, Powai. In the first session the topics ‘effect of global warming & challenges of congeniality of the heat waves’ and ‘effect of heat waves on health & remedies’ were thoroughly discussed. Experts of various subjects along with government authorities were present at this program.
The sudden rise in the death toll in the summer is evidence of the heat wave badly affecting the human body directly or indirectly. We need to be informed about the causes of death so that we will be enabled for planning remedies for heat strokes, said Prof. Dr. Mahavir Gulecha of IIT.
Deaths due to heat waves or heat stroke are evident for a long time but are seriously taken cognizance recently. Global warming is resulting in heat strokes badly affecting humans and wildlife opined the experts during this dialogue.
Heat stroke is affecting sectors like health, the economy, and education directly or indirectly. There is a need to increase citizens’ participation along with governmental authorities to control the granger of heat strokes. If not coped up in time, it can lead to an increased death toll in the future. The experts discussed this issue in the dialogue.
The government has to take lead for sensitization & awareness on various levels. There is a need to increase the number of atmospheric centers, and the availability of universal data regarding the diagnosis of how heat stroke affects the human body. Joint-Director of the Animal Husbandry & Dairy department Prashant Kamble underlined the fact that the animals also suffer from heat stroke like humans. To avoid suffering, we need to maintain proper water supply, shed, medicines, and healthcare and avoid working in heat, he said.
A discussion on various topics like the implementation of a ‘heat action plan’, ultra-modernizing of the alert systems, use of proper colors to maintain the domestic temperature, avoiding the use of glasses for buildings, use of full roof technology, other states to follow weather station model of Karnataka, strengthening of the health sector, and implementation of various remedial governmental programs in collaboration with local bodies.
Joint-secretary of NDMA Kunal Satyarthi, Managing Director of IMD Dr. Ajit Tyagi, Members of NDMA Dr. Krishna Vatsa, Kamal Kishor, from IIT Prof. Kapil Gupta, Prof. Mahavir Gulecha, Suresh Rathi of Public Health participated in the dialogue.
