Vijayadashami is celebrated as the victory of good over evil. Ravan defeated Sita with ego; Ram killed this egoist Ravan on the tenth day. Therefore, the practice of burning effigies of Ravan is going on throughout the country on the day of Vijayadashami, as a result of the destruction of evil. However, tribal organizations have objected to this practice and have asked the Nashik Collector and Police Commissioner to stop the practice of burning effigies of ‘Mahatma’ Ravan. The organization members have threatened to lodge criminal cases under the Atrocity Act if Ravan Dahan is held in Nashik.

The organization submitted that Ravana is considered an idol in the tribal society. Even though Ravan is considered to be a symbol of bad tendencies, a section of tribal society considers Ravan as a saint. Mahatma Ravan had a set of many qualities. He was a great warrior. There is a conspiracy to defame this great king. There are 352 temples dedicated to Ravan in Tamil Nadu. Madhya Pradesh has an idol of about 15 meters in Madasaur. Ravan is worshiped in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra. The organization has alleged that Ravan was worshiped but some people made an evil practice of burning Ravan effigies. Therefore, the tribal community is hurt due to this act. The organization president Ashok Bagul has submitted a request to police commissioner Ravindra Singhal and additional district collector Nilesh Sagar demanding that burning of Ravan effigies should not be allowed this time. Therefore, this objection is likely to cause new controversy.

Every year there is the procession

Even though Ravan effigies are burnt in the evening on the day of Vijayadashami in Nashik, the tribal organizations took out his procession and worshiped his idol on this day. This procession is started from Ravan temple at Ramkund. This event is celebrated every year. Some organizations have taken objections to this event but in vain. However, this time the tribal organization has taken two steps ahead and has now demanded a complete ban on Ravan Dahan or burning effigies of Ravan.

Atrocity alert

This year, if Ravan Dahan is held, all the tribal organizations warned that a sharp protest will be organized. In the case of Ravan Dahan from non-tribals, and for the grievance of the tribals, a criminal case will be filed under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocity) Act, 1989 and under Indian Penal Code for creating enmity between two groups and other relevant charges under the Maharashtra Police Act.
