Yerwada Central Prison | 15 staffers from Yerwada Central Prison to be transferred due to their role in four mobile phone smuggling in jail

Pune : Yerwada Central Prison | As many as 15 prison employees on Tuesday evening were reportedly found smuggling four cellphones inside the Yerwada Central Jail in a high-level probe carried out by the prison authorities.

Following the finding, the authorities have recommended transfer of the jail staffers to other state prisons.

The probe finding has caused concerns to the security apparatus because the jail administration a week ago had installed the smart phone card-based calling booths for jail inmates to curb such illegal practices.

There are 6,724 inmates lodged in the Yerwada jail as against its capacity of 2,752.

As many as 25 other prisoners have been shifted to the Nashik and Amravati prisons for their hand in the incident. Another batch of 25 more inmates’ transfer to these jails is awaited.

ADGP of Prisons & Correctional Services Amitabh Gupta said, “The 15 jail employees have been transferred to other prisons in the state following their involvement in the mobile phones smuggling case. An inquiry was conducted in the incident. Strict legal action will be taken against all those found guilty.”

Four mobile phones were spotted near Madi Gate by the internal jail security guards on June 25. Batteries were concealed in two tennis balls while the handsets were covered with soft cotton. A case was registered at the Yerawada Police station on June 26 under the Prisons Act, 1894.

A prisoner’s relative said some jail employees were suspected to be involved in the smuggling of the phones as they also act like postmen as they go outside the jail. They demanded that body scanners should be set up at the main gate to check such smuggling of mobile phones and other such things in the prison.

Earlier cases in 2023

This is the fifth such incident on the prison premises. A cellphone was seized in the prison on April 1. It was hidden under the tin sheet wall of the bathroom of a barrack in circle number 1.

Two handsets were recovered inside a steel gate of a section of Anda Cell on April 20.

A cellphone, along with a battery and SIM card, was recovered from barrack number 1 of circle number 1 on May 19. A mobile phone battery was confiscated from an undertrial inmate on May 22.
