Women Beware, taking these pills to postpone periods might make you pay for life!

Mood swings, irritation, cramps, pain, women go through a lot during the time span of four to five days of their menstrual cycle every month. The cycle is natural and women have accepted it as a part of their lives.

But, dear all females, if you are willing to go against the nature, you might have to face the consequences too.

Taking medicines to postpone periods is at finger tips of most girls and women and they consider doing it as normal. But what they are unaware of is the negative impact caused by disturbing the natural menstrual cycle.

Though the doctors have adviced that there is no harm in consuming the pills rarely but women end up taking them frequently which is dangerous to their life as risk bearing of such pills consumption is unsafe.

On an average, many women take pills to delay their periods, specially the Indian women who are not allowed to be a part of holy and spiritual rituals if they are on periods, going for treks in rainy season or water parks, they don’t want to miss on the fun, henceforth they end up consuming contraceptive tablets.

Npnews24 correspondent had a conversation with some well- known doctors of Pune who shared their views on this issue. This is what they said:

Dr. Alka Ranade, senior gynecologist & Director of Pune based Shashwat Hospital, said, “A proper gynecologist can always guide better. Medicines taken for about 3-5 days is all right that too which are recommended by doctors. Continuing them for prolong period might cause irregular cycles of menstruation, problems in conception, bleeding, irregular spotting and other issues. Only progesterone tablets should be consumed, combined oral contraceptive pills which are used for contraception should be completely avoided.”

Dr. Asmita Potdar, Obstetrician & Gynecologist infertility specialist said, “Women taking medicines and pills to delay their periods once in a while is fine, because ultimately the pills are hormones and we cannot keep on giving them hormones as hormones do have long term repercussion.”

She said, “Only and only after consultation of doctors, such hormones should be consumed. Overall, trend of taking medicines without prescription of doctors among people needs to change. Oral contraceptive pills or progesterone tablets will definitely have their own side effects if not discontinued.”

Dr. Smita Pravin Tapdiya, who runs Shrirang Rugna Seva Sadan Maternity and nursing Home, Parli, Beed said, “Regular consumption of such pills might cause hormonal imbalance in body. The natural cycle gets disturbed and might be prone to PCOD (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) which is a hormonal disorder which might cause cyst in ovaries. Today youth tends to sit and work in office which leads to weight gain.”

Adding to that she said, “Women in rural areas tend to use such pills less often. However, it is more commonly used by urban women.”

Side effects:

  • Obesity: One of the major side-effect of taking such pills is weight gain or obesity caused by the hormonal imbalance in body, especially when women prefer to sit and work only.
  • Heavy bleeding: Women might incur into heavy bleeding during their periods due to consumption of such pills frequently.
  • Conception complications: Complications related to conception might be seen in future, and henceforth, might result into complications in conceiving.
  • Irregular menstrual cycles: Menstrual cycle might get disturbed and become irregular. Date of periods appearing every month might change leading women to skip their periods.
  • Male type hormonal changes in women: It includes appearance of hair on upper lips and other such changes in woman body.
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A hormonal disorder in which ovaries in a woman body enlarge and small cysts occur on the outer edge which again creates a complication in a woman body.
