Two persons cheated of Rs 16 lakh on Telegram by fraudsters by luring them into online work

PUNE : NpNews24 Online  – Pune Cyber Crime News | People are being cheated on a social media platform by luring them to offer online work. Once a person contacts cyberthieves, they are asked to complete certain tasks and forced to pay money online. (Pune Cyber Crime News)

Two cheating cases amounting to Rs 16.19 lakh were lodged on Monday in the city.

Modus operandi

People are asked to join Telegram social media platform. They are then asked to perform tasks such as hitting the ‘like’ button below a video clip or to comment or post a review on Google. They are told that they would be paid for this. Initially, money is paid to gain trust. Later, they are told that a certain amount of money should be deposited, on which returns would be paid. Gradually, the amount is increased.

Thus, money is collected on various pretexts. Victims get money in their account but they cannot withdraw it. They are then asked to complete another task to withdraw the money. Victims pay more money on the promise that they would get double-triple returns. This becomes a never-ending process. Later, they realise the cheating.

A 30-year-old woman from Shukrawar Peth lodged a complaint in this regard at the Khadak police station. She paid over Rs 7.63 lakh. She was told that she would get higher benefits by completing online tasks by working from home.

A 45-year-old man from Wagholi lodged another complaint at the Lonikand police station against Riya Shukla, Pranjal Singhal, residents of Punjabi Bagh, Delhi, Manavi Goyal and Avantika Guleria.

He was forced by the cyber thugs to deposit over Rs 8.55 lakh in various bank accounts after asking him to perform various online tasks.

PI Patil is investigating the matter.
