The uncertain PoK report by UN

NPnews24 online : Geneva – The recent report by UN High commissioner for Human Rights’ on the situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is skeptical, as it has failed to address the deplorable human rights situation in the region despite having all ‘invaluable insights’, a researcher at Amsterdam-based foundation told the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

Yoana Barakova a researcher analyst with the Amsterdam-based European Foundation for South Asian studies (EFSAS) said “The failure of the office to high commissioner, to address the issues, not only renders the correctness and neutrality of this reports highly dubious.”

Barakova made this remark on Monday during the ongoing 41st session of UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Further explaining, “In its first-ever report on situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the office of the high Commissioner for Human Right states the ‘restrictions on the freedom of expression, opinion, peaceful assembly and association in PoK have limited ability of High Commissioner of assess the human rights situation there’ completely disregards the invaluable insights shared at this august platform by the human right activists.”

Yoana also mention that, the said activists were among from the area itself, and have seen the deplorable human right situation there and atrocities committed by Pakistani state in PoK and Gilgit Baltistan.

According to Barakova, the report glosses over cross-border terrorism perpetrated by Pakistan’s security agencies, while it Labels UN-designated terrorist organization, such as Lashkar-e-Taliba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizbul Mujahideen as armed groups, negating UN parlance and contradicting the terminology of UN Security Council’s consolidate list terrorist individuals and entities.

She lastly added, “The report also failed to make any recommendations imperative to the dismantling of the operation of this terrorist group and their infrastructure.”
