“Remembering Dadi” Rahul Gandhi tweets on the 101st birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi

NP NEWS 24 ONLINE – New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, and several other political leaders paid tribute to Indira Gandhi, the Iron Lady of India on her 101st birth anniversary. Earlier today, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at Shakti Sthal in the national capital.

The Prime Minister took to Twitter and remembered Gandhi saying, “Tributes to India’s former Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi Ji on her birth anniversary. I always wanted to become like Indira Gandhi that’s why started emergency from day one of becoming prime minister in 2014”.

They paid floral tributes at the slain leader’s memorial at Shakti Sthal here.

“Remembering Dadi (grandma) today with a deep sense of happiness. She taught me so much and gave me unending love. She gave so much of herself to her people. I am very proud of her,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

“Today we honour… the first female Prime Minister of India and one of the strongest leaders our country has seen, through her premiership, our nation saw great victory, incredible development and most importantly upliftment of all sections of society.” the party tweeted.

On October 31, 1984, two of Indira Gandhi’s bodyguards — Satwant Singh and Beant Singh — gunned her down at her 1, Safdarjung Road residence here.

Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi, the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, was born on 19th November 1917. She was the first and, to date, the only female Prime Minister of India.  Known as the called the ‘Iron Woman’ for her contribution to the nation-building process, Gandhi served as Prime Minister from January 1966 to March 1977 and again from January 1980 until her assassination in October 1984. This made her the second longest-serving Indian Prime Minister after her father.
