Pune News | Pavana Dam Reaches 51% Water Storage, But Alternate-Day Water Supply in Pimpri Chinchwad Continues

Pimpri : Pune News |  The recent heavy rains in the dam area over the last five days have brought a glimmer of hope for residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad as Pavana Dam’s water storage reached 51%, ensuring a sufficient water supply for the next six months. The dam serves as the primary source of water for various villages in the Maval region, including Pimpri-Chinchwad. However, despite this positive development, the Municipal Corporation has announced that the current water supply schedule of alternate days will continue.

With the persistent rainfall since June 1, recording an impressive 1010 mm in the dam area, the water storage has increased by 33.44%, reaching 51.43% capacity. This substantial rise in water levels has offered a much-needed respite to the region grappling with water scarcity.

The decision to implement alternate-day water supply was initiated by the Municipal Corporation on November 25, 2019, with the intention of ensuring equitable distribution of water resources. Despite this approach continuing for over three and a half years, the citizens of Pimpri-Chinchwad remain eager for daily water supply.

Citizens have voiced their concerns and demands for a more regular water supply, particularly given the current improved water levels in the dam. However, the Municipal Corporation asserts that the alternate-day water supply system will persist, citing reasons such as efficient water distribution and a reduction in water complaints as the driving factors behind their decision.

Shrikant Savane, Associate City Engineer of the Water Supply Department at Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, affirmed that Pavana Dam’s current water storage is sufficient to meet the city’s water demands for the next six months. He stated that the Municipal Corporation is consistently supplying 580 million liters per day (MLD) of water to residents and confirmed that the alternate-day water supply will continue as planned.

While the increase in water storage at Pavana Dam brings relief to Pimpri-Chinchwadkars, the Municipal Corporation’s stance on maintaining the current water supply schedule has left some citizens disappointed. However, the administration is focused on optimizing water distribution and ensuring that water resources are used prudently, taking into account the overall water situation in the region.
