Pune News | Electorate in state voting for candidates with criminal background, reveals survey; 54 per cent of elected MLAs and MPs are tainted

PUNE : Pune News | Since the last 20 years, the voters in the state are voting for candidates with criminal background who have huge property. In these 20 years, the voters have elected 1,326 MLAs and 715 MPs (54 per cent) with criminal backgrounds, a survey has revealed. On an average, all MPs and MLAs have property of ₹12.5 crore.

 

The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Maharashtra Election Watch have carried out a survey of the wealth and property mentioned by candidates in their affidavits and crimes registered against them. Some shocking facts have come to light and since 2004, the electorate in the state have elected 54 per cent candidates with criminal backgrounds as their leaders.

 

From 2004, out of 1,326 MLAs and MPs, serious crimes like murder, attempt of murder, rape, attempt to rape, extortion and molestation are registered against 422 elected representatives. Their wealth is increasing day by day and on an average, tainted MLAs and MPs have property of ₹14.79 crore, said ADR’s founder member and Chancellor of Gokhale Institute Dr Ajit Ranade at a press conference. The state convener of Maharashtra Election Watch Sharad Kumar was also present.

 

The ADR survey gives details of which party has given tickets to how many tainted candidates. BJP, Shiv Sena, Congress, NCP, AAP, BSP have given tickets to candidates with criminal background.

 

Out of 727 candidates of BJP, crimes are registered against 395 candidates and serious crimes are registered against 216 candidates. 386 candidates have been elected. Crimes are registered against 835 Congress candidates and serious crimes are registered against 306 candidates. Of them, 267 candidates were elected. The Shiv Sena had put up 773 candidates from 2004 to 2009. Of them, crimes are registered against 495 candidates. Serious crimes are registered against 309 candidates. Of them, 283 candidates were elected.

 

During the 2004 to 2019 period, the NCP gave tickets to 700 candidates. Crimes are registered against 311 candidates and serious crimes are registered against 191 candidates. Of them, 250 candidates were elected. The AAP, which was formed in 2014, has given tickets to 70 candidates and crimes are registered against 12 candidates. Of them, serious crimes are registered against five candidates.

 

“The survey has been carried out to help voters think about the criminal background and wealth of the candidates before voting for them. It is necessary for candidates to check the background of the candidates before deciding to vote for him. Hence, we are carrying out a campaign,” said Dr Ajit Ranade.
