Pune : NpNews24 Online  –  Pune News | Exactly a year after Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde took it upon himself to rid Chandani Chowk of chaos, a new flyover was inaugurated. The work on decongesting Chandani Chowk was envisaged 7 years ago. Several flyovers and underpasses were proposed for the coveted project. However, there was little development up until last year. A bridge constructed in the 90s on Mumbai Bengaluru Highway was the main cause for delay in the work. Complicating matters further was acquisition of land for the project.

In August last year, CM Shinde was on his way to Satara when he also got caught in the endless jam at Chandani Chowk. He witnessed irate commuters along the stretch. Some of the citizens after spotting his convoy in the jam, approached the CM and narrated how they lose precious time on daily basis because of the congestion. Instead of zooming past in his convoy once the jam cleared up, the CM sought details of the project. Within days he called for a meeting of all the concerned officials on the site. He was told that the bridge connecting Bavdhan to Paud way back in the 90s was major obstruction in carrying out work on Chandani Chowk. Also, the bridge had narrowed the national highway, leading to jams.

Without much ado, he issued instructions to demolish the bridge by roping in experts. With CM at the helm of affairs and constantly taking review, NHAI appointed Noida based agency Edifice Engineering. The firm had just demolished twin towers in Noida after court orders. The bridge was demolished on October 2 last year and path for development of underpass and flyovers was cleared. Within months of the obstruction getting demolished, the Chowk has witnessed a whole lot of progress.
