Pune News | Action against 316 constructions in PMRDA area! Informed Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in the Legislature

Pune: Pune News | The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is facing a significant challenge with the prevalence of thousands of unauthorized constructions within its limits. Despite efforts to curb this issue, only 316 unauthorized constructions have been demolished so far, leaving many citizens concerned about the lack of decisive action.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde recently addressed the issue after MLAs raised questions during the session regarding the protection of unauthorized constructions in villages newly included in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). In response, Chief Minister Shinde shared that actions have been taken against holders of unauthorized structures as per the provisions of the Maharashtra Regional Planning and Town Planning Act, 1966. However, only 316 cases have seen eviction proceedings, with 15 unauthorized constructions currently proposed for demolition. Additionally, crimes have been registered in six cases, and 28 cases are pending for criminal proceedings.

One of the major concerns raised by citizens and MLAs is the suspicion that unauthorized constructions are being protected through the exchange of notices between concerned construction owners and authorities, leading to financial compromises. However, Chief Minister Shinde has clarified that there is no evidence to support such allegations, and no action will be taken against officers and employees unless concrete evidence is found.

The Unauthorized Construction Survey has revealed a staggering number of 7,631 unauthorized constructions erected without proper permissions within PMRDA limits. Between 2015 and 2018, 1,213 illegal constructions were identified, while from 2019 to 2022, an alarming 6,418 unauthorized constructions were reported. Despite these shocking figures, citizens are disheartened by the apparent lack of effective action taken by PMRDA against these violations.

The prevalence of unauthorized constructions not only poses legal and safety concerns but also raises questions about the efficacy of the regulatory and enforcement mechanisms in the region. It has led to public debates about whether the PMRDA is providing shelter to those involved in unauthorized constructions. As citizens and MLAs call for stricter measures to address this pressing issue, the authorities must act swiftly and decisively to prevent further proliferation of unauthorized structures. Ensuring the integrity of the planning and town development process is vital to maintaining the safety, aesthetics, and sustainable growth of the region.
