During Ganesh festival, various flowers, fruits and coconut are widely used by devotees for worshiping lord Ganesh. These flowers, fruits and coconuts collectively are called ‘Nirmalya’ (Floral waste). Every year, all  these organic materials are produced at very large scale during  Ganesh festival.

The Pune based Rotary club made ‘Best Out of Waste’. They made fertilizers out of the Nirmalya (Pooja Flowers) collected during the Ganesh festival from Ganesh Mandals. Rotary club is going to distribute all the fertilizers free of cost to people.

The president of Rotary Youth- Shrikant Joshi said, “Rotary Youth has been implementing this initiative for past several years. The capacity of shredding machine is such that it produces fertilizers two tonnes per hour. The fertilizers produced by this project is distributed free of cost to citizens by proper packaging.”

Many people including Rotary Youth president Shrikant Joshi, former prantapal Abhay Gadgil, Manoj Dharap, former president Ajay Kulkarni, secretary Gopal Nirmal, corporator Jayant Bhave and corporator Madhuritai Sahasrabuddhe took part in this initiative.

Advantages of such initiative:

-This fertilizers are made up of organic materials an not from chemicals, thus it is environment friendly and non-hazardous.

-Because of such products, it is not necessary to dump the floral waste (mixture of various organic and inorganic materials like).

-If the Nirmalya is thrown in water, it affects marine life and causes water pollution. Thus it can be avoided by such initiatives.

-This initiative converts the waste materials(floral waste) into useful materials(fertilizer).

-Citizens can get such fertilizers free of cost, which will also increases awareness about greenery.
