Mundhwa Jackwell should be made fully functional by repairing baby canal- MP Anil Shirole

Pune: NP NEWS 24 ONLINE – If the problems with Mundhwa Jackwell and baby canal will be solved at priority, Pune will be able to treat sewage with full capacity and that can be provided for irrigation. Along with this, if the leakages in Temghar dam will be repaired, Puneites will not need to face water cuts again, pointed out MP Anil Shirole in the Canal Committee Meeting held in Mumbai today.

The meeting was held in presence of Girish Mahajan, Water Resources Minister, Vijay Shivtare, Minister of State for Water Resources, Girish Bapat, Guardian Minister for Pune, Dilip Kamble, Minister of State for Social Justice, Ajit Pawar, Nationalist Congress Party Leader, MLAs Medha Kulkarni, Madhuri Misal, Vijay Kale, Yogesh Tilekar, Rahul Kul, Dattatray Bharne, Baburao Pacharne.

In 2011, Water Resources Department, Pune Corporation and state government made an agreement to construct Mundhwa Jackwell to treat sewage and to make the water usable for irrigation. City corporation has spent Rs. 100 Cr. For this Jackwell and it was decided that the treated water will be provided up to Indapur through a baby canal. Mundhwa Jackwell can treat 550 mld (millions of liters per day) water per day, but due to problems in the canal, this facility is underutilized. So even Pune has the capacity to treat 550 mld sewage water daily and provide it for agriculture, currently only 3.5 tmc water is being treated.

Shirole said that problems with the baby canal should be solved at priority and Mundhwa Jackwell must be used to its full capacity. ‘‘Obstacles in the baby canal can be removed by using JCB machines and then the repair work should be undertaken to fix leakages. Temghar dam also has problem of leakages which leads to wastage of lot of water. That also should be repaired as early as possible. If this is done, Puneites will not need to face water cuts.,’’ He said.
