Mumbai-Pune Expressway | Two-Hour Shutdown on Mumbai-Pune Expressway on July 27 Due to Heavy Rains and Landslides
Pune: Mumbai-Pune Expressway | In response to the recent heavy rains and landslides in mountainous regions of Mumbai, the Konkan, and western Maharashtra, authorities have announced a special two-hour road shutdown on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The closure, scheduled for July 27, 2023, aims to address safety concerns arising from rockfalls and landslides in the affected areas.
To ensure the safety of commuters, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will be entirely closed for two hours on Thursday from 12PM to 2PM , with traffic heading towards Pune remaining open during this period. The closure is necessary to carry out repair work on loose fractures caused by the recent weather conditions.
During the two-hour shutdown, light traffic from Magic Point will be redirected to the old Pune-Mumbai highway, while heavy traffic will be diverted from Kiwale to the old Pune-Mumbai highway. However, traffic heading towards Pune will not be affected by the closure.
The decision to implement the special block comes after a crack was discovered behind the Adoshi tunnel on the expressway, leading to a collapse on July 23. This incident triggered mudslides and debris, including boulders, onto the road, posing a significant safety risk for commuters. In response to this incident, a special two-hour block was also carried out on July 24 to address the issue. The upcoming block will focus on removing the remaining loose cracks to prevent any further accidents.
It is important to note that the last block was slightly delayed due to incomplete construction, raising concerns about the urgency of removing the loosened cracks amidst the continuous heavy rain. Commuters traveling from Pune to Mumbai will be required to utilize the old Mumbai-Pune motorway during the scheduled two-hour closure.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is a heavily trafficked road, with thousands of vehicles commuting on it daily. As a result, there may be an increase in the number of cars on the Pune-Mumbai road prior to the planned block, potentially leading to traffic congestion.
