Jadavpur University professor writes misogynist virginity post

NPnews24Online KOLKATA:   An absolute shocking post came in light after a Jadavpur University professor Kanak Sarkar posted a sexist and misogynist post on his Facebook account where he objectified a girl’s virginity as sealed bottle. It wasn’t just one post, there were series of controversial Facebook post regarding women’s virginity.

In the recent awful post, which has now been deleted, Sarkar asked, “Are you willing to buy a broken seal while purchasing a bottle of cold drink or a packet of biscuits?”

“A girl is born sealed from birth until it is opened… A virgin girl means many things accompanied with values, culture, and sexual hygiene,” Sarkar said.

“To most boys, a virgin wife is like an angel,” the Jadavpur University professor added.

Although, he deleted the post now, a number of other posts expose his sexist views. One of his post uploaded on November 19, Sarkar had mentioned that these days, boys and girls do not consider celibacy and virginity as part of ethics and morality. That is why, girls end up being “exploited by the cunning boys”.

He further described virginity as precious as honesty and morality. In yet another post he wrote on December 22, Sarkar said that if a woman is a virgin before her wedding, she should be proud of it.

“Express your virginity during marriage negotiation or during love affair or even in married life. I am sure you will be honoured by your husband or lover. Every man respect’s and aspires for a virgin wife. To the men folk, virgin wife is like angel. Women should know this fact,”” Sarkar said.

He also gave an example of the Japanese. “They proudly claim that 99 percent Japanese girls remain virgin till marriage. Japanese society is so progressive and developed,” Sarkar said.

Following the criticisms, Sarkar responded on Facebook: “I write my personal opinion. Supreme Court has repealed section 66 A of IT Act and given freedom of expression in Social Media.”

Leena Gangopadhyay, chairperson of the state women commission, said, “It only goes to show there has been little change in the mindset of certain people. Some tend to see women only in this manner and such statements reflect that, time and again. Whatever it is that may have provoked the statement, even perhaps to seek attention, is condemnable. What pains me is the statement has been made by a person who is very qualified and educated.”
