Hyderabad: The ever buzzing and lively IT corridor of Hyderabad, is now empty as the the techies have continued staying in their respective hometowns since March. This has put hundred of people that were directly and indirectly dependent on them, including the hostel industry.

There are an estimated 3,500 hostels and guest houses in this belt located in and around HITEC City, Gachibowli, Madhapur and Kondapur.

As many as four lakh IT employees were staying in guest houses and hostels run by locals . Most of these hostels are now almost empty since the lockdown in March.

Over 60,000 families who served as cooks, housekeeping staff, helpers, watchmen, transport operators and drivers for these techies are now hit and facing huge losses as the techies have not returned yet and there seems to be now sign of the same anytime soon.

Amarnath Reddy, president of IT Corridor Hostels Association, said, “As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the hostel business was facing multiple challenges like paying rents to buildings, salaries to employees and maintenance, and was literally struggling to survive now.

“We never expected that the hostel industry, which remained undeterred during different phases, would face a zero business prospect,” Reddy said.
