As the festive season is arriving soon, Ganpati Mandals and retailers selling thermocol decoration items are worried because of the ban on plastic and thermocol.

After banning the use of plastic, there are various obstacles in Maharashtra’s biggest Ganesh Festival. After imposing the ban on thermocol and plastic items used for decoration, a big question which has arose in front of the artisans making Ganapati statues is the covering of statues of Shadu.

For this, the sculptors had asked for the solution from the Mumbai Municipal Corporation and the Bombay Public Ganesh Festival coordination committee. After having discussions with Municipal Corporation’s Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Nidhi Choudhary, permission was given to use the plastic cover to protect the idols from rain. This permission has been granted for both the arrival and the immersion of the Ganaraya.

To protect the Shadu’s idols of Ganaraya from rain and to dry it, it will be allowed to keep the idols covered with a plastic cover which will help and protect them from rain during the arrival and immersion. This time only the concern of sculptors and Ganesh devotees increased due to the ban on plastic use in Maharashtra.

Thermocol ban has been brought just before the few days of Ganesh festival. Ganesh Pandal organisers complain on such bans because they finalize the themes and decorations at least two months before. These materials get wasted because of such bans without any prior notice not given before they produce the decoration items. Also those decorators who are basically into thermocol decorations do not get the orders from clients.

Sculptors and Ganesh devotees had demanded from Mumbai Municipal Corporation and Bombay Public Ganesha Festival coordination committee. This matter was kept in discussions with the Deputy Municipal Commissioner Nidhi Chaudhary, in which she gave the order of using plastic covers for Ganesh festival.

The issue of offerings made by Ganesh Mandals in plastic bags was discussed in this meeting. It has been advised to give Prasad in a butter paper instead of plastic. The information was provided by the Municipal Corporation for the use of clothe’s bags instead of plastic for coconut, flowers, and prasad. Ganesh Utsav Coordination Committee has prepared for the promotion of plastic ban for the protection of the environment.
