First time in cricket lesbian married couple bats together

NP NEWS 24 ONLINE – ICC Women’s T20 World Cup has started with a blast with India winning both the matches in a row. The Indian captain Harmanprit Kaur made Indians proud by being the first Indian women to score a century in the T20I. Other than India’s outstanding run in world cup there is something even more interesting that has happened.

A married couple has batted together for the first time in the history of ICC tournaments.

South African captain Dane van Niekerk and her wife Marizanne Kapp became the first ever married pair to bat together in an ICC tournament. It was the first time that audiences witnessed a lesbian couple take to the field in a major ICC tournament. Amy Satterthwaite and Lea Tahuhu created their own slice of history when they played in the World T20 as a married couple.

They achieved this interesting feat against Sri Lanka in Women’s World T20 on Monday. The duo shared a third-wicket stand of 67 to help South Africa win. They also took their respective 50th T20I wickets in the match.

South Africa woman skipper Dane van Niekerk married her team-mate Marizanne Kapp in July 2018 and they will become the second-openly lesbian couple of play in the World T20 in West Indies.

Interestingly, both van Niekerk and Kapp’s careers have progressed almost identically. While van Niekerk is the leading wicket-taker for South Africa with 125 wickets in ODIs, Kapp is third on the list with 99 scalps.

Late in 2017, Australian cricketer Elyse Villani had admitted being a lesbian, and she is believed to be seeing her teammate Nicole Bolton.

After the postal survey conducted in 2017 in Australia in order to get the Parliament to discuss legalizing same-sex marriage, another cricketer Megan Schutt celebrated the ‘Yes’ vote by posting a photograph kissing her partner Jess Holyoake.
