Five members of his maternal family have been missing for three days in the village of Maniyarankudi in Idukki which is one of the most affected districts of Kerela by floods. Sajan learnt this on the eve of his 200m butterfly event on Sunday. All his mother’s efforts to shield him from any upsetting news until the end of his competition were in vain as ultimately Sajan came to know about this tragedy.

National record holder Sajan said ,”I didn’t think of history or what the medal would mean when I stood on the starting blocks for the final. I was at least trying hard not to. But I guess I was nervous, I couldn’t catch much sleep since I heard my uncle and his family had gone missing. It’s hard when your mind is restless and you’re fearing the worst but still have to focus on the competition.”

Floods and torrential rains in Kerala have led to a disastrous state in the state. This rain has broken the record of the past 100 years. So far, 324 people have been killed and more than three lakh people are homeless.Prime Minister Modi also held a meeting with Kerala Chief Minister P Vijayan and other ministers to enquire about the situation of the state. He has announced a relief package of Rs 500 crore to Kerala.

Sajan Prakash still performed outstandingly in extraordinary circumstances. He might have failed to win a gold medal but he has definitely won millions of hearts and made the nation proud.
