Every Fifth Person in the World is at Risk of Serious Coronavirus Infection: Study

London : Policenama Online – Every fifth person in the world suffers from a serious illness and if such a person is affected by the coronavirus, then the risk of getting seriously infected is relatively high. It has been claimed in a study. This study may help to develop strategies to protect people from COVID-19 who are at greater risk of infection.

The study, published in the journal The Lancet Global Health, says that 1.7 billion of the world’s population, i.e. 22 percent of the world, has been suffering from some serious illness for a long time. Because of this they have a higher risk of getting seriously infected with the coronavirus. This team of researchers also includes researchers from Britain’s London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Researchers said that among those who are more at risk of serious infection, the most people are from countries where the elderly population is more. Among them are a large number of people from African countries where AIDS / HIV patients are more. Apart from this, a large number of people are also at risk of becoming severely infected in those small island countries where there are more diabetes patients.

They said that those who are at greater risk of serious infections include patients with severe kidney disease, diabetes, heart disease and severe respiratory disease. Researchers said that every fifth person in the world is suffering from a chronic critical illness and if such a person has a coronavirus infection, there is a higher risk of being severely infected. However he stated that the hazard rate varied depending on age. According to America’s Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, more than 88,00,000 people worldwide are infected with the coronavirus while more than 4,35,000 people have died.
